Korean
Etymology 1
From Middle Korean 별〯 (Yale: pyěl), from Old Korean 星利 (*PYEli). In the Hangul script, first attested in the Hunminjeong'eum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례), 1446, as Middle Korean 별〯 (Yale: pyěl). Compare dialectal forms 비얼 (bieol), 밸 (bael), 베리 (beri), 빌 (bil), 벨 (bel), etc., some of which appear to preserve the original bisyllabic form.
Pronunciation
- (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [pjɘ(ː)ɭ]
- Phonetic hangul: [별(ː)]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
