First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄇᆡ〮골ᄑᆞ다〮 (Yale: póy-kwòlphò-tá). (bae, belly) + 고프다 (gopeuda, to be hungry).
