Etymology
First attested in the Gugeupganibang eonhae (救急簡易方諺解 / 구급간이방언해), 1489, as Middle Korean 닥나모 (Yale: tak-namwo), equivalent to 닥 (dak, “paper mulberry”) + 나무 (namu, “tree”).
As paper-making was introduced from China, compare Old Chinese 楮 (OC *taːʔ, *tʰaʔ, “paper mulberry”), although the correspondences are imperfect.
Altaists compare this to Japanese names of hemlock or zelkova: とが/つが (栂) and つき (槻).
