Etymology 1

Modern Korean reading of Hanja 加羅/伽羅/迦羅, all different ways to transcribe the same native word.

This is closer to the original name for the people than 가야 (伽倻, gaya), which is now more common, because the second character was originally chosen for the Old Chinese pronunciation of 耶 (OC *laː), whereas the modern Korean reading 야 (ya) comes from the Middle Chinese pronunciation for 耶 (MC yae). Compare Japanese 漢(から) (kara, “the Gaya; Korea; China; foreign places in general”).
