Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀳𑀢𑁆𑀣 (hattha), from Sanskrit हस्त (hásta), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰástas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰástas (“hand”). Cognate with Assamese হাত (hat), Bengali হাত (hat), Chakma 𑄦𑄖𑄴 (hāt) and Rohingya hát.
