Usage notes

This term was originally written as (しょう)(がい) (shōgai), but replaced by (しょう)(がい) (shōgai) in the national language reform due to (がい) (gai) not listed in (とう)(よう)(かん)() (Tōyō kanji) (Chinese characters for daily use, now replaced by (じょう)(よう)(かん)() (Jōyō kanji)). The character (がい) (gai) could also mean harm, so or がい are often used in place of it to avoid its negative connotation.
