Etymology

Originally part of an oath which was sworn, for instance, on the Convention of Kuiqiu (葵丘之會 [651 BCE]) as recorded in the Zuozhuan:

凡我同盟之人，既盟之後，言歸于好。 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
凡我同盟之人，既盟之后，言归于好。 [Classical Chinese, simp.]

Fán wǒ tóngméng zhī rén, jì méng zhīhòu, yán guī yú hǎo. [Pinyin]
We all who have united in this convention shall hereafter be reconciled in goodness.

The same oath was also quoted in the Mencius.
