Etymology

Originally part of an oath which was sworn, for instance, on the Convention of Kuiqiu (葵丘之會 [651 BCE]) as recorded in the Zuozhuan:

同盟之後言歸于好 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
同盟之后言归于好 [Classical Chinese, simp.]
From: Commentary of Zuo, c. 4th century BCE
Fán wǒ tóngméng zhī rén, jì méng zhīhòu, yán guī yú hǎo. [Pinyin]
We all who have united in this convention shall hereafter be reconciled in goodness.

The same oath was also quoted in the Mencius.
