Glyph origin
Characters in the same phonetic series (朱) (Zhengzhang, 2003)
Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *to) : semantic 虫 (“insect”) + phonetic 朱 (OC *tjo). Originally a pictogram (象形) of a spider. Later, 朱 was added to the pictograph to indicate sound. In small seal script, the character became written as the characters 鼄/𬹣 and 蛛.
