Etymology
Near-homophone of the profanity phrase 肏你媽/肏你妈 (cào nǐ mā, “fuck your mother”) in Mandarin, literally “grass mud horse”.
Coined circa 2009, when Internet users in Mainland China used 草泥馬/草泥马 instead of 肏你媽/肏你妈 (cào nǐ mā) to circumvent censorship. Pictures of alpacas are often used by later hoaxes to depict 草泥馬 as if it were a real horse-like animal.
