Compound of 紅 (beni, “crimson (color); rouge (makeup)”) + 差し (sashi, “applying, putting on”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of verb 差す sasu, “to put on, to apply”) + 指 (yubi, “finger”). From the common practice of applying rouge using one's fourth or ring finger.[1]
