Thai Chinese, especially the middle-aged and elderly, are often able to speak Teochew regardless of whether their ancestral hometowns are located in the Chaoshan region of Guangdong or not. Some are even unable to speak the dialects of their ancestral hometowns, speaking only Teochew.
