Etymology

From () (ari, (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb () (aru, to be)) + (がた) (-gatai, difficult to). Compare ()(がた) (arigataki), ()(がた) (arigatashi), and ()(がと) (arigatō). The original meaning was "difficult to be".
