Etymology

From Tibetan དར་རྩེ་མདོ (dar rtse mdo) (Ma, 1987). Written as 打煎爐／打煎炉 in the Ming dynasty.

Folk etymology derives the place name from the legend of Shu Han chancellor and military strategist Zhuge Liang, during his southern campaign, dispatching a general called Guo Da (郭達) to set up furnaces and forge arrows there. However, it is doubtful whether Guo Da was an actual historical figure.
