Etymology

Compound of 意気(いき) (iki, “disposition; spirit, courage, confidence”) + 込(こ)み (komi, “going in; being full of”, the 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 込(こ)む (komu, “to go in; to be full of”).).[1][2] The komi changes to gomi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

First cited to a text from 1656.[1]
