Probably from 孤寒 (gu1 hon4, “stingy”) + 度 (dok6, “to measure; to ponder”). Alternatively, 鐸/铎 (dok6) may be the name of a miser (Bai, 2003); compare English scrooge < Ebenezer Scrooge, Eastern Min 貽順哥/贻顺哥 (ì-sông-gŏ̤) < 馬貽順/马贻顺 (Mā Ì-sông).
