Etymology
From Manchu ᠮᡝᡵᡤᡝᠨ (mergen, “good hunter”), from Mongolian ᠮᠡᠷᠭᠡᠨ (mergen, “sharpshooter”), so named by the Qing dynasty in reference to the area being part of the hunting grounds of the Daur, Solon and Oroqen peoples before the city's founding in 1685.

The city was refounded as Nenjiang in 1908, after which the term became used only for historical purposes.
