Etymology

(, four) + (, fiddle, short for 胡琴 (húqín), a family of Chinese vertical fiddles), implying "four-stringed fiddle." During the Qing Dynasty the original official name of this instrument was tiqin (提琴) and the original vernacular name was sixian (四絃) before sihu was finally adopted in the 19th century.
