Noun
半角 • (hankaku)
- (attributive, computing, typography, of an East Asian character or glyph) the state of being halfwidth which, in early computer encoding, occupies 1 byte, and in modern typography, visually either equals 1 en or proportional
Usage notes
- In the computing sense, CJK characters in Unicode, including the so called "halfwidth" ones, are at least 3 bytes; ASCII characters are still 1 byte, thus technically "halfwidth". In the typographic sense, non-CJK characters are proportional in most fonts, while "halfwidth" CJK characters are monospace and technically "halfwidth".
