Etymology

Compound of 八尺瓊 (yasakani, long or large jewel, literally eight-foot jewel) + (no, possessive particle) + 勾玉 (magatama, curved jewel, type of ancient curved bead resembling a bear claw). The “eight-foot” may have originally referred to a long cord or necklace on which such magatama beads were strung, as magatama themselves were never so large.[1][2]
