Etymology

From 遺教經 (The Sutra on the Buddha's Bequeathed Teachings, a Chinese translation; the original version in Sanskrit has been lost.):

世皆無常，會必有離。 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
世皆无常，会必有离。 [Classical Chinese, simp.]
Shì jiē wúcháng, huì bì yǒu lí. [Pinyin]
Everything about the world is impermanent. A meeting is always accompanied with a parting.

Literal translation (kanbun kundoku) in Japanese:

世(よ)皆(みな)常(つね)無(な)し、会(あ)えば必(かなら)ず離(はな)る有(あ)り。

Yo mina tsune nashi, aeba kanarazu hanaru ari.
Everything about the world is impermanent. A meeting is always accompanied with a parting.
