From Old Japanese, from Proto-Japonic *kati. Cognate with Northern Amami-Oshima かち (xachi), Okinawan かち (kachi), Kunigami かちー (kachī) and Eastern Old Japanese 加志 (kasi, whence Japanese 徒 (kashi)).
