Per Beeks, derived from the root *(H)yeh₁- (“to throw”), equivalent to ἵημι (híēmi) + -σμός (-smós). Others derive from the root *sed- (“to sit”), equivalent to ἕζομαι (hézomai) + -μος (-mos).
