ἀσπαίρω
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- σπαίρω (spaírō)
Etymology
The assertion that ἀ- in this verb is secondary has no basis. Rather the form without it will be secondary. From Proto-Indo-European *sperH- (“to kick”) together with Latin spernō (“to despise”), Sanskrit स्फुरति (sphurati, “to spurn”), Proto-Germanic *spurnaną (“to kick, trample”).
