Etymology

Unknown, but probably a loanword. Connected with ἁβρός (habrós, delicate) by folk etymology. According to Bailey, from Akkadian 𒄑𒃾𒄈 (amurdinnu, thorned flower). Perhaps transmitted by a substrate language.[1]
