អា • (ʼaa)

  1. Deprecated independent vowel, no longer used. Now អ (ʼɑɑ) +‎ ា (ា), or អា (ʼaa), is used instead.

Usage notes

This independent vowel and the syllable អា (ʼaa) look identical. After the Unicode alphabet was used for a few years, it became clear that having two separate but visually identical letters was confusing and led to a lot of misspellings. It was decided that the symbol អា (ʼaa) should be used for both the syllable and the vowel.
