From Old Chinese 鎖 (OC *soːlʔ). Cognate with Burmese သော့ (sau.), Khün ᨪᩳ, Lü ᦌᦸ (soa), Shan သေႃး (sáu), Tai Nüa ᥔᥨᥝᥰ (söw), Khamti ꩬူဝ်း, Mon သအ်. Compare Thai โซ่ (sôo, “chain”), Lao ໂສ້ (sō, “chain”), Khün ᩈ᩠ᩅᩫ᩶ (“chain”).
