Etymology
From Old Georgian ვაჲ (vay). Akin to Mingrelian ვოი (voi), Laz ვოი (voi), Svan უ̂ა̈ჲ (ûäy). Probably natural exclamation. Compare also Persian وای (vây), Proto-Indo-European *wáy.
The adverbial usage is a semantic loan from Russian го́ре (góre).
