According to Chirikba, from Old Georgian აფხაზი (apxazi), from Mingrelian აფხაზა (apxaza), from *აბღაზა (*abɣaza), from *აბაზღა (*abazɣa) with a metathesis, from the plural of the Abkhaz *абазӷа (*abazğa).[1]
