From Old Georgian აფხაზეთი (apxazeti) attested in The Martyrdom of Saint Abo, in that time denoting the kingdom of Abkhazia, which took up most of western Georgia; equivalent to აფხაზი (apxazi, Abkhaz person) + -ეთი (-eti).
