Inherited from Old Burmese ရိယ် (riy), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rəj (“water; liquid; body fluid”). Cognate with Pela ɣəi⁵⁵, Tangut 𗋽 (*zjɨ̱r²), and Tshangla ri¹³.
