Etymology
From Proto-Karen *mɛʔᴰ (“eye, face”) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *mɛʔ¹ (“idem”) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-mjak ~ s-mik (“eye”). Cognate with S'gaw Karen မဲာ် (meḥ), Pa'o Karen မဲ့. Compare Western Kayah ꤗꤢꤧ꤬ꤞꤢꤧ꤬ (màethàe).
