From Proto-Karen *mɛʔᴰ (eye, face) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *mɛʔ¹ (idem) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-mjak ~ s-mik (eye). Cognate with S'gaw Karen မဲာ် (meḥ), Pa'o Karen မဲ့. Compare Western Kayah ꤗꤢꤧ꤬ꤞꤢꤧ꤬ (màethàe).
