Etymology

From Proto-Karen *mɛʔᴰ (eye, face) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *mɛʔ¹ (idem) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-mjak ~ s-mik (eye). Cognate with Pa'o Karen မဲ့, Western Pwo မ့ၬ, Eastern Pwo မေံ. Compare Western Kayah ꤗꤢꤧ꤬ꤞꤢꤧ꤬ (màethàe).
