Etymology
From Proto-Karen *mɛʔᴰ (“eye, face”) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *mɛʔ¹ (“idem”) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-mjak ~ s-mik (“eye”). Cognate with Pa'o Karen မဲ့, Western Pwo မ့ၬ, Eastern Pwo မေံ. Compare Western Kayah ꤗꤢꤧ꤬ꤞꤢꤧ꤬ (màethàe).
