From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m/s-glak ~ m-glaŋ.

Cognate with Chinese 冷 (lěng, “cold”), Lahu gawˬ (“cold, chilly”); also compare Chinese 晾 (liàng, “to dry”), Burmese ခြောက် (hkrauk, “dry”).

Doublet of གྲང (grang).
