From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g/m-liŋ (neck). Cognate with Phom ɯŋ³³, Konyak Naga ung phang, Tangsa kʰiŋ, Mru ling, Karbi ingphun, Mising əlüŋ, Mising  po, Adi ɯŋ guŋ, Nyishi ləŋ-poː.
