From Proto-Southwestern Tai *bɛːŋᴬ² (“expensive”), from Proto-Tai *beːŋᴬ (“expensive”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨻᩯ᩠ᨦ, Lao ແພງ (phǣng), Lü ᦶᦗᧂ (paeng), Shan ပႅင်း (péng), Zhuang bengz, Nong Zhuang biangz or byangz. Compare Sui mbingl (“expensive”).
