Borrowed from Pali upajjhāya (“spiritual teacher; spiritual preceptor”, literally “one who is gone close up to”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ឧបជ្ឈាយ៍ (ʼupacchiə). Compare Sanskrit उपाध्याय (upādhyāya).
