สกุล

Thai

Etymology

Possibly extended from กุล (gun), from Pali kula (clan, family; caste, class), ultimately from Sanskrit कुल (kula, idem), or corrupted from ตระกูล (dtrà-guun), from Old Khmer ត្រកូល (trakūla, idem), that believed to be an aphaeresis of Sanskrit गोत्रकुल (gotrakula, idem). Cognate with Lao ສະກຸນ (sa kun).

In taxonomy, semantic loan from English genus.
