From Pali vihāra (“monastery”) or Sanskrit विहार (vihāra, “academy; sanctuary; temple”); perhaps via Old Khmer vihāra (“monastery”). Compare Modern Khmer វិហារ (vihiə); Lao ວິຫານ (wi hān); Burmese ဝိဟာရ (wi.hara.).
