Borrowed from Old Khmer កាម្ពិ (kāmbi), កាំម្ពីយ (kāṃmbīya), កំពីយ (kaṃbīya), កុំម្ពិ (kuṃmbi), កុំម្ពីយ (kuṃmbīya, “sacred text; scripture; treatise”); ultimate origin undetermined.
Cognate with Modern Khmer គម្ពីរ (kumpii).
