Etymology
From Sanskrit प्रवेणी (praveṇī, “braid of hair worn by widows or by wives in the absence of their husbands”); probably via Old Khmer °praveṇī, pravaiṇi, pravaini (“tradition, custom; succession, lineage”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ប្រពៃណី (prɑpɨynii), Lao ປະເພນີ (pa phē nī). Compare Pali paveṇi, from which Thai ปเวณี is derived. Doublet of ประเวณี (bprà-wee-nii).
