Etymology 1

From Proto-Tai *χiːŋᴬ (ginger). Cognate with Lao ຂີງ (khīng), ᦃᦲᧂ (ẋiing), Tai Dam ꪄꪲꪉ, Tai Nüa ᥑᥤᥒᥴ (xíng), Shan ၶိင် (khǐng), Ahom 𑜁𑜢𑜂𑜫 (khiṅ), Bouyei hingl, Zhuang hing, Zuojiang Zhuang hing. Compare Middle Chinese (MC kjang, “ginger”), Proto-Hlai *kʰɯːŋ (ginger).
