Etymology
From Proto-Dravidian *akka- (“elder sister”). Cognate with Tamil அக்கா (akkā), Kannada ಅಕ್ಕ (akka), Tulu ಅಕ್ಕ (akka), ಅಕ್ಕಾ (akkā), or ಅಕ್ಕೆ (akke), Malayalam അക്ക (akka), or അക്കൻ (akkaṉ). Compare Sinhalese අක්කා (akkā).
