Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀥𑀡𑁆𑀡 (dhaṇṇa), from Sanskrit धान्य (dhānya, “grain, corn; rice”), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰoHnéh₂, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)-. Doublet of ધાન્ય (dhānya). Cognate with Assamese ধান (dhan), Bengali ধান (dhan), Hindi धान (dhān), Punjabi ਧਾਨ (dhān).
