Etymology

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀮𑀝𑁆𑀞𑀺 (laṭṭhi), from Sanskrit *लष्टि (laṣṭi), probably composed from लकुट (lakuṭa) (whence Hindi लकड़ी (lakṛī)) + यष्टि (yaṣṭi), both of which mean "stick" or "pole".
