Borrowed from Classical Persian مرحومة (marhūma), from Arabic مَرْحُومَة (marḥūma, literally “recipient of mercy”). Cognate with Hindustani مرحومة / मरहूमा (marhūmā), Punjabi ਮਰਹੂਮਾ (marhūmā), Gujarati મરહૂમા (marhūmā), Sindhi مَرْحُومَة / मरहूमा (marhūmā).
