Borrowed from Classical Persian (marhūm), from Arabic مَرْحُوم (marḥūm, literally “recipient of mercy”). Cognate with Hindustani مرحوم / मरहूम (marhūm), Punjabi ਮਰਹੂਮ (marhūm), Gujarati મરહૂમ (marhūm), Sindhi مَرَحُومُ / मरहूम (marhūm).
