Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit स्फूर्ति (sphūrti, “quick, strong or rash movement”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *spʰr̥Htiṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sp⁽ʰ⁾r̥Htiš, from Proto-Indo-European *spr̥Htis, from *sperH- (“to kick, move quickly or rashly”). Cognate with Hindi फुर्ती (phurtī), Punjabi ਫੁਰਤੀ (phurtī), Nepali फुर्ति (phurti).
