Etymology

Inherited from Middle Assamese কঁকৰা (kõkora), from Early Assamese *কঙ্কড়া (koṅkoṛa), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀓𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀟 (kakkaḍa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit কৰ্কট (karkaṭa, crab), with the word structure and semantic domain suggested borrowing from a substrate language; compare Santali [script needed] (kaṭko̱m, crab). Cognate with Kamta কাঁকৰা (kãkora), Bengali কাঁকড়া (kãkṛa), Sylheti ꠇꠣꠇꠠꠣ (xaxoṛa), Odia କଙ୍କଡା (kôṅkôḍa), Hindi केकड़ा (kekṛā).
