Inherited from Prakrit *𑀓𑀁𑀝𑀳𑀮 (*kaṃṭahala), from Sanskrit कण्टफल (kaṇṭaphala, literally “thorny fruit”), from कण्ट (kaṇṭa, “thorn”) + फल (phala, “fruit”). Cognate with Sylheti ꠇꠣꠑꠟ (xaṭól), Rohingya haththól, Assamese কঁঠাল (kõthal), Odia କଠଲ (kôṭhôlô), Magahi 𑂍𑂗𑂯𑂩 (kaṭ-har), Bhojpuri कटहर (kaṭᵊhar) and Hindi कटहल (kaṭhal).
