Inherited from Prakrit 𑀑𑀛𑀸𑀅 (ojhāa), from earlier *𑀉𑀯𑀸𑀚𑁆𑀛𑀸𑀅 (*uvājjhāa), from Sanskrit उपाध्याय (upādhyāya, (religious) teacher). Cognate with Assamese ওজা (üza) and Hindi ओझा (ojhā). Doublet of উপাধ্যায় (upaddhaẏ) and খাজা (khaja).
